Lopsided Jose

-

JOSE MOURINHO has always made tactical tweaks to utilise the personnel available and he’s done it again at Spurs with what I call his ‘lopsided full-backs’.

He signed Sergio Reguilon in September and the Spanish left-back has great athleticism, an abundance of energy and flies forward whenever he can. Matt Doherty arrived from Wolves with similar attributes on the right but, to protect the balance of the team, Mourinho usually selects the more defensive-minded Serge Aurier instead.

It gives Reguilon greater licence to bomb on without the fear that the defence is exposed. And Aurier has shown the discipline to time his runs and ensure Spurs aren’t left with only two defenders back.

Both deserve credit for making it work and Mourinho for working out a system that allows them to play to their strengths.
