The Sound Of TV With Neil Brand

-

BBC4, 9pm When Neil Brand (right) was a youngster, big orchestral scores were mostly reserved for the movies, and heard on the small screen in only a few programmes – such as the pioneering natural history series The Undersea World Of Jacques Cousteau.

In the final episode of his impassioned and enlightening series, Brand charts how, since the 1970s, that cinematic sweep has become a part of TV culture. He hears from composer Carl Davis about how he found a way to accompany the powerful images of The World At War, while George Fenton looks back at his music for the drama The Jewel In The Crown, plus The Blue Planet and Planet Earth.

Also, we discover the secret of scoring reality shows, and The Sopranos’ creator, David Chase, opens up about the ‘eclectic jukebox’ he found for his show’s characters. ★★★★☆
