STUART BROAD (cricket) Dropped for the opening match of the Test series against West Indies, the 34-year-old returned to take 16 wickets at 10.93 in two Tests and passed 500 wickets in his career, the seventh bowler to do so.

HOLLIE DOYLE (racing) The 24-year-old broke her record for winners ridden by a British woman in a year with 146. She also became the first woman to ride five winners on the same card, at odds of 899-1, at Windsor. TYSON FURY (boxing) He became a two-time world heavyweigh­t champion by defeating Deontay Wilder. The 32-year-old asked to be removed from the shortlist but the organisers refused.

LEWIS HAMILTON (motor racing) The 35-year-old Stevenage-born driver is favourite to win the award, having equalled Michael Schumacher’s record of seven Formula One world titles. He also passed the German’s total of 91 grand prix wins. JORDAN HENDERSON (football) He captained Liverpool to their first league title since 1990. The 30-year-old midfielder has been capped 58 times by England. RONNIE O’SULLIVAN (snooker) The 45-year-old won his sixth world title at the Crucible to become the oldest champion for more than 40 years. One of snooker’s greats, it is the first time the Rocket has been nominated for the BBC award in his 28-year career.

HOW TO VOTE — Voting will be open to the public during the Sports Personalit­y programme on BBC One today. Details will be announced during the event, which starts at 8pm. Other awards include Team and Coach of the Year, World Sport Star of the Year and Unsung Hero. Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford will receive a special award in recognitio­n of his work to raise awareness of child food poverty in the UK.
