The likes of The Killing and The Bridge may have received more media coverage, but continental crime fans know that this French saga is one of the best of BBC4’s Saturday evening imports. But sadly, all good things must come to an end, and the eighth run is the show’s last.

It picks up with bluff detective Gilou behind bars and the rest of troubled police captain Laure’s (Caroline Proust, right) detective team in disgrace.

The only way they can redeem themselves is by solving a case nobody else wants to touch, which involves the murder of a child.

However, as is often the way with Laure and her colleagues, they are soon opening up a whole new can of worms.

Sadly, their efforts to uncover the truth may be hampered by the retirement of their ally, Judge Roban, and the appointment of a less experienced magistrate who seems determined to make her mark.
