Holy smoke! Superheroes are trashing the planet

- By David Jarvis

MANY of our best-loved superheroes aren’t much good at saving life on earth after all.

A new study suggests that the antics of iconic characters such as Batman and Superman are actually detrimental to the environment.

Researchers awarded points to 30 fictional heroes with categories including eco-friendly weaponry, transportation, physical composition and ethos.

They also watched superhero movies and counted the number of times the central character was responsible for harming the environment or preventing damage.

The findings will make uncomfortable reading for former Batman actor and eco-warrior George Clooney. The study ranked Batman in third- last place because of his fuel-guzzling Batmobile and dependence on high-tech hardware.

Bottom of the table was Iron Man because of the repeated damage he causes with his arsenal of weapons.

By contrast, Spider-Man emerged as t he most ecofriendly superhero. The character scored highly because his main weapon is his organic spider’s web which he also uses for travel purposes. His closeness to nature and animals won him maximum points.

The research was carried out by energy saving website Save On Energy.
