TV FILMS OF THE WEEK
ROMANCING THE STONE Sunday, ITV4, 4.40pm
Indiana Jones may have had Harrison Ford but this 1980s classic has the wonderful Kathleen Turner as a New York romantic novelist and the charismatic Michael Douglas as a roguish mercenary. The romantic undercurrents are a delight.
LOGAN Tuesday, Film 4, 9pm
The third Wolverine spin-off from the X-Men franchise is set in a near future that sees an ageing Logan (Hugh Jackman) in decline. Until a young girl with familiar powers arrives.
THE ITALIAN JOB Wednesday, Film 4, 6.55pm
Possibly not Michael Caine’s greatest film but still huge escapist fun with the great man upstaged by three Mini Coopers and one of the most-loved car chases in film history.
TEA WITH MUSSOLINI Thursday, BBC4, 8pm
Dames Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Joan Plowright join forces with Cher (right) in an em emotional drama set in Italy in the midmid-1930s. It’s more complex and moving than the cheery title might imply.
THE WIFE Friday, BBC2, 9pm
Glenn Close gives her best performance for decades as the tirelessly supportive wife of a novelist – a superb Jonathan Pryce (above, with Close) – who wins the Nobel Prize. Then cracks in their seemingly perfect partnership start to emerge.
BLACK NARCISSUS Saturday, BBC2, 1.15pm
After the BBC’s recent version of Rumer Godden’s novel, why not catch up with the 1947 film version directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger and starring Deborah Kerr?
TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY Saturday, BBC2, 9.30pm
For many, Alec Guinness is the definitive George Smiley. But Gary Oldman is quietly every bit as good in this 2011 film of the late John le Carré’s best-known spy thriller, which sees Smiley being brought out of retirement.
