GARDEN GURU

-

Q The garden of our new house has a steep bank. What can I plant on this awkward space?

David Davies

A There are plenty of suitable fast-growing, ground-covering plants, including Rubus ‘Betty Ashburner’ and Persian ivy. Before setting anything in the ground, consider covering the bank with matting and cutting planting holes through the material. This will prevent the soil being washed away during rainy spells.

Q How do I look after Osmanthus heterophyllus ‘Goshiki’?

Rita Kelly

A This lovely evergreen shrub is fairly undemanding. It needs a sunny or partially shaded spot and will respond well to being fed with a general fertiliser in early spring. If necessary, prune wayward branches in mid to late spring to retain an attractive shape.

Q A plant with heart-shaped green leaves has taken over our borders. I dig out as much as I can in spring but can’t bring it under control. Help!

Keith Rowson

A It is Houttuynia cordata, a perennial usually seen around water features. It’s an invasive beast – I would suggest spot-treating it with herbicide in spring followed by another application in summer.
