Wendy house raid was like 1984
What Sylvia Young experienced, as reported last week – being visited by police over reports that she was holding church group meetings in a Wendy house in her garden – is straight out of George Orwell’s 1984.

I was dumbstruck by Sylvia Young’s article in last week’s issue. This is the sort of person, supposedly educated, who is causing the rise in Covid cases.
Why does she think she is sufficiently above all the safety measures? The rules when it happened stated: no meetings indoors. She broke those rules.
June Morris, Bournemouth
People like her and her friends are a danger to us all.
Phil Gledhill, Norwich
It boils down to how the rules are interpreted. According to gov.uk, ‘for work, or providing voluntary or charitable services’ is an acceptable reason to meet people outside your household in tier 4. They were clearly meeting for voluntary or charitable services, so didn’t break the rules at the time.

Why couldn’t they just have a Zoom meeting like the rest of us?

My 84-year-old mother was visited on Christmas Eve by police, who stated they had reports of over six people in her house. Yet it was only her and my brother. Britain has become a society of snitches.
