A NEW innovation for this America’s Cup, the mainsail will be ‘double-skin’ with two separate carbon fibre mainsails either side of the D-shaped mast, which mimics the shape of an aircraft wing. The sail can change shape to get the best aerodynamic flow depending on whether the boat is travelling up or downwind. As the wind flows over the sail it produces thrust. The more wind that blows, the more the team can turn into thrust. When the boat is moving fast enough, the foils will be able to create lift to make the boat fly. The headsails are the same material but come in different shapes and sizes, depending on wind strength.
