THE 11 CREW

-

Combined weight limit 960-990kg. Each crew member is allowed to carry 5kg of equipment including crash protection, air supply, knives, radios, headsets and food and water.

HELMSMAN (Sir Ben Ainslie)

Ben is in charge of team tactics, steering and keeping the boat going as fast as possible. He decides when to use the foils and initiate manoeuvres. He is linked up to all other sailors at all times.

TACTICIAN (Giles Scott)

Reads the conditions and feeds the information back to Ainslie. Also helps steer the boat during manoeuvres.

MAINSAIL TRIMMER (Bleddyn Mon)

Controls the huge double-skin mainsail to keep the boat as stable as possible and allow Ainslee to fly the boat as accurately as possible.

FLIGHT CONTROLLERS (Leigh McMillan & Luke Parkinson)

Monitor and control the foils on each side of the boat. In charge of keeping the boat flying above the water at the correct height.

GRINDERS (Chris Brittle, Graeme Spence, Ben Comish & Neil Hunter)

The real powerhouses. They control everything above the waterline, turning pedestals to create as much power as possible to help control both the mainsail and headsail. Neil Hunter, one of the grinders, recently recorded 405 watts of average power across 20 minutes.

TRIMMERS (Nick Hutton & Joey Newton)

Support the grinders and have a grinding pedestal but they also trim the headsail (the jib). They are the only people onboard who hold a rope and operate a winch to trim the headsail.
