Whether you’re already a fan of this thriller series, now on its third run, or are new to the adventures of Marcella (Anna Friel, right), the first episode in this week’s opening double bill is a tad disorientating.

The good news is that novices will be able to pick up the story pretty much as well as previous viewers, as we find our heroine adopting a new look, persona and even name – Keira – in her latest undercover investigation. She’s embedded within the Maguire family, a crime clan in Northern Ireland who appear to be up to their necks in just about every kind of dirty business.

Soon bodies are rapidly dropping left, right and centre, under the eye of gang boss Katherine (Amanda Burton). Brace yourself for wrenching violence and sudden shocks, but this is Friel’s star turn as she serves up another powerhouse performance in the title role.
