GARDEN GURU

Q I have a fig tree with lots Q of tiny fruit on its branches. Is it normal for them to carry fruit in winter?

Wendy Pryer

A Yes, it’s quite normal. Fig A trees can produce up to three crops a year, although not all of the fruit ripen. The embryonic fruit currently on your plant will swell and ripen and be ready for harvesting in summer.

Q We are slowly building up Q our garden and would like to plant some pyracanthas.

Please could you recommend some suppliers?

Imre Maltzahn

A There are several companies you might like to try, including Crocus (crocus. co.uk), Larch Cottage Nurseries (larchcottage.co.uk) and

Jacksons Nurseries (jacksons nurseries.co.uk).

Q The flowers on my camellia open, but then they turn brown and drop off within 24 hours. What do you think could be wrong with it? Derek Gibbons

A It sounds as if your plant has been attacked by camellia flower blight, a fungal threat that leads to the edges of flowers turning brown before the infection spreads rapidly inwards. There are no chemical cures, but disposing of fallen flowers that harbour the disease will help to reduce problems next year.
