Why is there such a buzz about..?

- Kelly Woodward

Bling Empire ( Netflix)

Netflix is fast proving to be a big hitter in the world of guiltypleasure reality TV. This time last year it stole hearts with the dating series Love Is Blind and now it’s introduced the eight-part Bling Empire, looking into the lives of Asian-American socialites.

The show follows a group of super-wealthy friends who actually seem to have been pals in real life as opposed to the usual set-up of strangers brought together for our entertainment. It stars the Korean model Kevin Kreider, Kane Lim, the son of a Singaporean billionaire, Kim Lee, one of the biggest DJs in East Asia, and wannabe queen bee Christine Chiu (far right, with Lee), the wife of ‘the 24th generation direct descendent of the Song dynasty’. However the star of the show is socialite Anna Shay, the peculiar half-Japanese daughter of an international arms dealer.

When we are first introduced to the 60-year-old, she is demolishing her walk-in closet with a sledgehammer and surprises fellow cast member Kelly Mi Li by taking her to her favourite restaurant… in Paris.

What is great about the show is that these characters seem to be genuinely minted, and make the women in Selling Sunset look cheap. They will splash their cash on everything from a Gucci arcadestyle claw machine at a child’s first birthday party to a wall featuring $300,000 worth of trainers.

There’s also a great villain in the shape of Andrew, an actor who is on-off dating Kelly and has some serious trust issues.
