Smithies scare takes shine off Cardiff win

-

ALEX SMITHIES handed Cardiff City a huge scare after the goalkeeper collapsed and had to be carried off on a stretcher in the ninth minute of his team’s win at Bristol City.

Smithies, 30, slumped against a post after appearing to fall ill. He had not been part of the action when he went down and medics treated him for eight minutes on the pitch before he eventually recovered inside the Ashton Gate medical room. Cardiff boss Mick McCarthy said: ‘He was brought up on a stretcher which was worrying, but we have no idea of the cause.’

The drama did not prevent the Bluebirds from easing to victory, thanks to goals from Curtis Nelson and Kieffer Moore.
