Why even vegans can’t resist the lure of the chippie

-

IT’S not the lure of a juicy steak that will make vegans fall off the wagon… it’s a humble plate of fish and chips.

A poll of 1,000 vegans who had spurned meat, fish, eggs and dairy for at least six months found 44 per cent had lapsed after failing to resist a chippy.

Two- t hi r ds s ai d t hey had ‘failed’ at least once, with some confessing to ‘ three or more blips’ in six months.

A roast dinner, full English breakfast and a bacon butty followed close behind in the list of temptations too good to resist from time to time.

The study also found ‘confusion’ over which foods were vegan, even among followers of the diet. Some 25 per cent didn’t know honey wasn’t vegan – despite it coming from bees – and 20 per cent were unaware that sweets contain gelatin, an animal collagen usually from pigs or cows.

Aimee Ryan, author of Great British Vegan cookbook, who has come up with plant-based re-creations of British staples like steak and kidney pie, said: ‘I hope to show people it’s possible to enjoy comfort foods you love, without using animal products and without compromising on flavour and familiarity.’
