M-way madness

Following a recent inquest into a tragic death on a smart motorway, there have now been calls to end them. The sooner the better. Motorways have a hard shoulder for a reason, so it seems crazy to remove them just to speed up traffic. Surely it is better to be a bit late in this world than early in the next? Angus Long, Newcastle
