TV fiction reveals the brutal truth

-

I DO wonder how it will end but I think it is very brave of the new Sunday night BBC drama Bloodlands, set in Northern Ireland, to admit that the supposed peace of today is based on avoiding and suppressing the truth.

Last Sunday’s grisly ending, in which the longburied corpses of political murder victims were embarrassingly and unwillingly unearthed, sums up the situation rather well.

There is no real peace. Just a period of cheating and pretence while the future is resolved and it becomes clear even to the dimmest who won and who lost. Peaceful protest and the rule of law lost. Armed criminal gangs of both traditions, and their apologists, won.
