Pull your socks up if you want a good sleep

-

BRITONS desperate for a better night’s sleep now have a simple solution – nod off in just your socks.

A study i nto t he sleeping habits of 2,680 volunteers, who were hooked up to monitors to measure their sleep patterns, found that those who drifted off with just their socks on got the most REM sleep.

REM sleep, characterised by rapid eye movement, is a vital part of our sleep patterns. It often lasts for about 25 per cent of our sleep and is the time when our brains are more active, leading to us dreaming more.

REM sleep helps us to remember things – especially skills we have learned the previous day – and also helps us to process our emotions.

The study, by sleep website The Dozy Owl, found that participants who wore just their socks had an average of 27 per cent REM sleep a night.

Those who slept in pyjamas got 25 per cent, while those wearing a onesie got an average of 20 per cent.
