Fresh from Zulu, Michael Caine (above, seated) sealed his fame by playing Harry Palmer, Len Deighton’s downbeat spy, in this iconic thriller. Palmer finds intrigue in high places while investigating the brainwashing of British scientists. Caine clearly enjoyed the role – he returned to it in four sequels.
