A decade of Masters misery

-

IT is 10 years since Rory McIlroy led the Masters by four shots going into the final round only to score 80 with a 43 on the back nine and finish 10 shots behind winner Charl Schwartzel. Since then he has thrown in a bad round in nine of 10 years to prevent him completing his Grand Slam.

2012: Total +5 (71, 69, 77, 76) tied 40th McIlroy was four under going into the third round but he carded nine bogeys and two double bogeys in the last two rounds.

2013: Total +2 (72, 70, 79, 69) Tie 25th A birdie at the third hole in the third round took him to minus three but triple bogey seven at the 11th and double bogey seven at the 15th for 79 blew it.

2014: Evens (71, 77, 71, 69) Tie 8th Same old story. Out in 37 and back in 40 in a second-round 77 and McIlroy was off the pace.

2015: Total -12 (71, 71, 68, 66) 4th Jordan Spieth was on fire but McIlroy had a chance to put pressure on the American only to drop shots at the 16th and 18th in the third.

2016: Total +1 (70, 71, 77, 71) Tie 10th Big numbers in the third round after he had

started at -3 and in contention and finished +2. He had three bogeys and a double bogey at the 11th.

2017: Total -3 (72, 73, 71, 69) Tie 7th Made a slow start and was three over par at the turn on the opening day. He never found form and five bogeys in the second round ruined him.

2018: Total -9 (69, 71, 65, 74) Tie 5th He was within one shot of leader Patrick Reed with a birdie at the 2nd hole in the final round. Alas, the wheels came off with five bogeys and 74.

2019: Total -5 ( 73, 71, 71, 68) Tie 21st A bogey at the first hole and he bogeyed his nemesis 11th hole on three of the four days and twice dropped a stroke at the last hole.

2020: Total -11 ( 75, 66, 67, 69) Tie 5th First round aside, he would be winner. He outscored the field with only two dropped shots in 54 holes.
