Sent off for heading own team-mate

-

GRIMSBY striker Stefan Payne faces being banned by his own club after he headbutted a teammate for a poor pass yesterday.

Payne was sent off after the halftime whistle as Grimsby — rockbottom of League Two — lost 1-0 at Bradford.

The striker reacted furiously after winger Filipe Morais misplaced a pass in stoppage time at the end of the first half.

Referee James Bell followed Payne to the tunnel, before calling him out of the dressing room to show him the red card. Morais did not reappear either after he was substituted.

Grimsby manager Paul Hurst said: ‘It’s something you can’t defend. The two players have let the club down, their team-mates down and the fans down.

‘We’ll be taking action. It will remain private but it will not be swept under the carpet.

‘(Payne) has got a three-match ban but I’ve got some thinking to do about whether he appears again for us this season.’

Bradford co-manager Mark Trueman said: ‘I heard the two players having a bit of a moan as soon as the whistle went. I was told by our players about the headbutt.

‘Grimsby are fighting for their lives and emotions are running high. Unfortunately he’s not kept his emotions in check.’
