Sport makes way to honour Prince Philip

- By James Sharpe

PREMIER LEAGUE and Football League matches will be moved to avoid clashing with Prince Philip’s funeral.

The Duke of Edinburgh died on Friday aged 99 and his funeral is due to take place on Saturday at 3pm, marked with a national minute’s silence.

The Football League announced last night that all matches in the Championship, League One and League Two scheduled to kick-off at 3pm would now be rearranged.

The Mail on Sunday understands that the Premier League will also look to move its 3pm kick-off, which was due to be Wolves against Sheffield United.

Premier League chiefs are due to liaise with the clubs and Government this week to finalise whether the match will be played at a different time on Saturday or move to another day.

Other sports are also expected to follow suit, with Premiership Rugby also announcing that all of their matches scheduled to be played between 3pm and 4pm on Saturday will be rearranged.

The FA Cup semi-final between Chelsea and Man City is due to be held on Saturday at 5.30pm and an update is expected tomorrow.
