Conway in demand

- By Richard Gibson

DEVON CONWAY is set to become a permanent feature of the English summer with Hundred teams eyeing him up as an overseas replacement.

Tournament organisers are braced for several more high- profile pull- outs, including a proportion of the Australian contingent after confirmation that neither David Warner nor Marcus Stoinis will participate, and the Kiwi trio of Conway, explosive opener Finn Allen and fast bowler Lockie Ferguson, the second highest wicket-taker at the 2019 World Cup, will benefit from already being in the UK.

Conway, 29, is already booked to follow his prolific introduction to Test cricket — he struck 80 in the first innings at Edgbaston after hitting a man-of-the-match double hundred at Lord’s — with two County Championship appearances and some Vitality Blast games for Somerset up to July 18, three days before the start of the monthlong, 100-ball competition.

Only players included in the Hundred drafts can be recruited by the eight sides, meaning those either with the New Zealand touring party or already here on county deals are attractive stand-ins.
