Two Doors Down

-

BBC2, 10pm

The Glaswegian sitcom returns with a three-part run and, as ever, Beth (Arabella Weir) and Eric (Alex Norton), both right, crave nothing more than a bit of domestic bliss – which is, as usual, always destined to be disturbed by visiting relatives, friends and neighbours.

In the opening episode, their son Ian (Jamie Quinn) is due to descend with his partner Gordon to enjoy a vegetarian curry Beth has cooked especially to celebrate the boys’ anniversary. But the evening doesn’t quite go according to plan, first as Ian’s parents wonder why he has a black eye, and then when Christine (the brilliant Elaine C. Smith) pops round to share the graphic details of her digestive problems.

Yes, it’s shamelessly stagey, but thanks to sterling performances and solid scripts, it’s clear why Two Doors Down is still going strong after eight years. ★★★★☆
