Dolly: The Sheep That Changed The World
BBC2, 9pm
Rarely has there been a science news story that caught the imagination of the world as much as the revelation in 1997 by scientists in Scotland that they had managed to create the first clone of an adult animal: a sheep called Dolly (right).
As recalled in this authoritative documentary featuring many of the scientists involved, it was an awe-inspiring moment that seemed to be straight out of science fiction – but also one that prompted political and religious leaders to voice fears of cloning being misused.
This is a remarkable story of a breakthrough achieved against the odds, leavened by some surreal moments of comedy, not least when Dolly Parton gave a shout-out to her namesake at a concert, adding that there’s no such thing as ‘baaa-ad’ publicity. )))))
