Vienna Blood
BBC2, 9pm
The first season of Vienna Blood in 2019 confidently established that here was a treat for detective thriller fans as delicious as a slice of Austrian sachertorte.
The two central detectives in Vienna a few years before the First World War proved to be an entertaining ‘odd couple’, with the steadfast, traditional Detective Inspector Oskar Rheinhardt (Juergen Maurer, right) bickering constantly with Max Liebermann (Matthew Beard), a young doctor convinced that new theories of psychology could be invaluable in helping to solve crimes.
In the first of three episodes they’re investigating the death of a widowed Hungarian countess whose body is found in the bath at a luxury hotel. The initial impression is of an accident or suicide, but when when strychnine is detected, the question is just who might have administered the fatal dose.
