ENCANTO DISNEY+ MUSICAL

Disney’s latest musical, Encanto, is the 60th animated film to be released by the studio. Complete with an original soundtrack full of energetic numbers from Lin-Manuel Miranda, it tells the story of Mirabel Madrigal (right) – the only member of her family not to have been bestowed with a special gift – as she finds herself trying to save the day when her house’s magic begins to fade. The voice cast includes a range of Colombian stars, including Brooklyn NineNine’s Stephanie Beatriz in the lead, while Byron Howard and Jared Bush (Frozen II) share director credits. From Friday

FILM DON’T LOOK UP NETFLIX MOVIE

Two astronomers, Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio, who go on a tour to warn people about a comet that’s on a collision course with Earth and will destroy the planet, are met with general indifference. It’s the end of the world as we know it – and no one cares. It’s a satire and should be very funny but it veers towards the heavy-handed. The expression ‘star-studded’ is overused but alongside Leo and J-Law are, among others, Meryl Streep (right), Rob Morgan, Jonah

Hill, Mark Rylance, Cate Blanchett, Timothée Chalamet, Ron Perlman and Ariana Grande.

From Friday

JIMMY CARR: HIS DARK MATERIAL NETFLIX COMEDY

In 2015, Jimmy Carr (left), most famous as the sardonic host of the panel show 8 Out Of 10 Cats, became the first British comedian to make an original stand-up special for Netflix, and this hour-long show is now his third for the streaming service. A clip from it of Carr mocking an anti-vaxxer went viral recently, in which he said: ‘The spread of Covid was directly linked to how dense the population is… and some are really pretty dense!’

Netflix promises that the caustic comedian finds humour in the darkest of places and that the show features some especially risqué material that he refers to as ‘career enders’.

From Saturday

From Thursday

THE HAND OF GOD NETFLIX FILM

Italian director Paolo Sorrentino provides a semi-autobiographical, coming-of-age tale of a teenager growing up in Naples in the 1980s. It’s joyous, funny, but poignant too. Pivotal moments in the life of young Fabietto (Filippo Scotti, bottom, far right) are provided by Diego Maradona, his beautiful but fragile Aunt Patrizia and an intimidating baroness.

EMILY IN PARIS NETFLIX COMEDY

Romcom in which Emily (Lily Collins, right), a young American woman, is posted to Paris and cavorts around irritating – and occasionally charming – the Parisians. From Wednesday

THE WONDER YEARS DISNEY+ REBOOT

Wonderful reboot of the beloved coming-of-age comedy that ran from the late 1980s to the early 1990s. In the original, Kevin Arnold (Fred Savage) was a young teenager in a middleclass family in the late 1960s, experiencing growing pains.

This new version (left) is pretty much the same, except that the Williams family are black and it’s set in 1960s Alabama. It’s hilarious, charming and powerfully nostalgic without being sentimental. Don Cheadle narrates and Savage directs the first few episodes. From Wednesday

UPSTART CROW: LOCKDOWN CHRISTMAS 1603 BRITBOX COMEDY

As bubonic plague ravages Jacobean London and the nation huddles fearfully indoors, William Shakespeare is enduring lockdown with his landlady’s daughter

Kate. Brilliantly played by David Mitchell and Gemma Whelan, this is a bravura two-hander packed with allusions to the 2020 pandemic. So instead of masks we have ‘plaguey beaks’, banging on pots to support the corpse-bearers, panic-buying of ham and, above all, boredom. Meanwhile, Will is trying to dream up a Scottish play for the new king. From Thursday
