The misery of motorways

I agree with Peter Hitchens’s comments about there being no pleasure in driving any more. In the early 1960s, as teenagers, my husband and I had travelled from Manchester to Skye on his motorbike, staying in friendly B&Bs in lovely little villages. No motorways, no satnav – just an old RAC map to plan our route. It may have taken longer in those days, but it was worth it.

Every developed country has an extensive motorway network, which is essential for the delivery of goods in volume between the main conurbations. Getting rid of motorways in the UK would be a big mistake. If anything, one could argue for a more extensive network as that would reduce bottlenecks and ease traffic flow. Just look at Belgium or the Netherlands.
