Met officers’ son pays out £800,000 over death crash

- By Charlie Moloney

AN £800,000 compensation deal has been agreed by the son of two police officers with the family of a sales manager he ran over and killed after taking drugs.

Max Coopey, now 20, was driving his Met Police sergeant father’s Audi A5 sports car when he hit Jason Imi, 48, in August 2018. Hours before the crash, Coopey had smoked cannabis.

Mr Imi, a father-of-three, and John Shackley, 61, were killed as they crossed a road while returning to a hotel in Sunninghill, Berkshire, after a work dinner.

In a hearing at the Central London County Court last week, Deputy District Judge David Smith said: ‘The circumstances of this accident were such that a factor of contributory negligence became relevant.

‘A figure has been reached in respect of the claimants. The overall figure is £800,000.’

Coopey, of Ascot, Berkshire, whose mother is also a Met sergeant, was 17 at the time of the crash. He had passed his driving test only two months before and had also been arrested for drugdriving around the same time.

A Thames Valley police investigation concluded he was not criminally liable for the deaths.

Mr Shackley’s family is also suing for compensation.
