GARDEN GURU

-

Our beloved dog Delilah was

Q recently put to sleep. Can you help me find a rose of the same name that I can give to my daughter to remember her by? Treza Hammond

A Find That Rose (findthatrose. co.uk) is the go-to database for roses. Sadly, no varieties are listed in the UK with the name Delilah, but there are several other plants you could consider, such as Phlox paniculata ‘Delilah’, Primula auricula ‘Delilah’ and Dahlia ‘Miss Delilah’.

Q Every year the fruit on my miniature apple tree are

ruined by a pest burrowing to the core. I’ve tried putting netting around the tree, but it has made no difference.

Bik Mistry

A It sounds as if your tree is being attacked by codling moths, which hatch into caterpillars that bore into apples.

In summer, pick off and destroy any fruit with telltale entrance holes. In early autumn, drench the trunk, branches and soil around the base of the tree with Nemasys Caterpillar Killer (nematodesdirect.co.uk).

We love garden birds, but Q the food we put out for them is eaten within minutes by pigeons. What can we do?

Alwyn Reed

A Pigeon-proof feeders are

widely available and are protected by a mesh cage that allows small birds access but keeps bigger ones out. Ensure they’re fitted with a tray to catch spilt seeds, or the pigeons will wait on the ground for leftovers.
