We can’t have a puppet for a Prime Minister

-

I actually believe the accusations in Lord Ashcroft’s explosive book First Lady, exclusive extracts from which were in The Mail on Sunday last week. They fit precisely with the extraordinary change in Boris Johnson’s statements and actions since his marriage.

It’s a tragedy, of course, as he could have been one of the best occupants of 10 Downing Street. However, a puppet Prime Minister must not govern this country.

I congratulate Sarah Vine for her defence of Carrie Johnson in last week’s Mail on Sunday. Anyone would think a Prime Minister’s wife had no right to an opinion.

Carrie is a member of the generation that will have to deal with the worst effects of global warming. Her views may not go down well with even her husband’s generation, but they will reflect what young people are thinking.

Sarah Vine and Carrie Johnson are not elected Members of Parliament. They should not be allowed to influence our leaders by means of family ties. Carrie has had her own career but should, for the sake of the respect and honesty we all demand of our leaders, stop this interference.

John Church, Alvaston, Derby

Sarah Vine was entitled to her opinion in her defence of Carrie

Johnson last week. However, don’t insult male critics of

Carrie by labelling them ‘misogynists’. It’s just a lazy label used when no real defence can be offered.

It’s a similar type of tag as that used to rebuff those who wanted to discuss the migrant problem but were labelled ‘racists’.

Lord Ashcroft states that Carrie Johnson is the reason Boris has squandered the chance to become a great Prime Minister, but that simply isn’t true.

Boris never had a chance of becoming an adequate PM, let alone a great one. He wants the glory but none of the hard

work that goes into earning it. Carrie is just a scapegoat for Boris’s mistakes.

Fiona Fisher, Sheffield

Stop Carrie-bashing! This endless witch-hunt and bullying is immoral. She’s a young mother in her 30s under attack from the press, Dominic Cummings and Lord Ashcroft without any avenue of reply.

Lottie Green, Kent

I’m certain the Prime Minister’s thick-skinned wife will Carrie on regardless, closely followed by her hapless husband desperately clinging to her designer coat-tails.
