Welsh fury at Dombrandt try

- AT TWICKENHAM By Nik Simon

EDDIE JONES admitted England got the ‘rub of the green’ in response to Welsh claims that Alex Dombrandt’s try should have been disallowed.

Dombrandt crossed for England’s only score at Twickenham, touching down in the second-half after Wales lock Adam Beard was pushed out of a defensive lineout.

Wales coach Wayne Pivac was furious at the decision, saying: ‘He was chased out of the lineout and bumped, which you can’t do. Unfortunately, that wasn’t picked up and the try stands.

‘It’s not very often you throw over the top close to your line. It’s unfortunate that no one picked it up. From the replay we’ve seen, there was certainly an offence.’

England lost in Cardiff last year after a controversial refereeing decision, and Jones responded: ‘We take the good with the bad. We took 14 points last year in a Six Nations game where they were allowed a play where it wasn’t alive and then a blatant knock-on.

‘There’s the rub of the green. Sometimes you get it and sometimes you don’t. So, if we got it today, that’s well and good. We’re not going to complain about it, just as we didn’t complain last year when we didn’t get the rub of the green.’

England’s 23-19 victory gives Jones’ men a slim chance of challenging for the title, although unbeaten France remain strong favourites.

England face Ireland in two weeks’ time but they could be without flanker Tom Curry and hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie, who both suffered injuries.

‘Curry has got a bit of concussion,’ said Jones. ‘We’re not too concerned that it’ll be any more than a normal head injury assessment and Cowan-Dickie will go for a scan.

‘He’ll probably have some sort of knee injury that will probably make it difficult for him to play in the rest of the Six Nations, but we’re not sure about it yet.’

England paid tribute to scrumhalf Ben Youngs, who broke Jason Leonard’s cap record when he came off the bench in the second half to play his 115th Test.

Youngs said: ‘I am very thankful for the rugby community and how they have responded this week and for the support I have been given.

It was a special moment and to have the family in the crowd to be there and witness it was even more special.

‘I look forward to having a beer with Jason next time I see him. He kindly messaged me today and I look forward to that very much.’
