Whatever turbulent events may be taking place in the real world of 2022, we can always turn to the adaptations of James Runcie’s clerical sleuthing for a reassuringly comfy murder mystery.

As the seventh series begins, the year is 1959, and detective Geordie Keating (Robson Green) and his pal the Rev Will Davenport (Tom Brittney, right with Green and Melissa Johns) are cutting loose in the bohemian environs of a modern jazz club. But the cultural changes aside, everything else is as you’d expect – for before too long a body has turned up, and it’s up to our duo to find the killer. In this case the victim is an aristocrat whose head has had a close encounter with a brick.

A billet-doux suggests this may have been a crime of passion, but more nakedly materialistic motives emerge for Keating and Davenport to consider. ★★★★☆
