Kumail Nanjiani drew on his own experiences with his wife and co-writer Emily V. Gordon for this acclaimed romantic comedy. A stand-up falls for a student (Zoe Kazan, above right with Nanjiani). Their different backgrounds put a strain on their relationship, but it’s when an illness leaves her in a coma that their bond is truly tested.
