Crackdown on useless uni degrees
‘MICKEY MOUSE’ university courses that saddle students with crippling debts and a worthless degree face a crackdown from Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi.
The move could require universities to publish drop-out and graduate employment rates on every course advert, in a similar way that banks have to be upfront about interest rates on loans.
The Department for Education is concerned that ‘not all students receive the same high quality of teaching’ and that many end up on courses that do not deliver good career prospects.
A Government source said the aim is to tackle universities cynically offering ‘silly’ degrees, and guide pupils towards other employment routes such as vocational courses and apprenticeships.
Ministers are also discussing proposals to introduce a ‘no C at maths GCSE, no university’ rule to significantly tighten criteria for entry.
A Government source said: ‘What we need to achieve is that following vocational routes becomes as prestigious as an academic or university one. People shouldn’t feel they have to go to university.’
