Truss: End the ludicrous row on pronouns and statues

- POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT By Brendan Carlin

LIZ TRUSS fired the starting gun yesterday on a new drive to crack down on ‘woke’ culture as the Foreign Secretary declared it was time to end ‘ludicrous debates’ on pronouns.

At the Tories’ spring conference yesterday, Ms Truss made clear that the UK’s response to the Ukraine crisis should restore pride in Britain’s values.

Ms Truss, who is also the Equalities Minister, said the ‘constant self-questioning and introspection’ had to stop.

The call comes amid growing controversy over calls to reinterpret key historical figures, such as Sir Winston Churchill, in line with modern sensibilities.

There have also been debates over people’s right to self-identify so that their gender is different from that of the sex they were born into, including adopting preferred pronouns.

But, Ms Truss said: ‘Our history – warts and all – makes us what we are today. We should be proud of our country, and our longstanding commitment to freedom and democracy.

‘Now is the time to end the culture of self-doubt, the constant self-questioning and introspection, the ludicrous debates about language, statues and pronouns.’

The call was backed by Boris Johnson: ‘We don’t need to be woke. We just want to be free.’
