Val McDermid is famous as a crime writer, but she shows a different side to her work in this semiautobiographical tale about an author (Louise Oliver) who is haunted by a folk song her father used to sing. Barbara Dickson (above) co-stars and provides the tunes.

In Radio 3 In Concert (Radio 3, 7.30pm) the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Guildhall’s Ubu Ensemble tackle the work of Frank Zappa.

The Verb (Radio 3, 10pm) comes from the After Dark Festival at Sage Gateshead, where Ian McMillan is joined by poets Kat François, Mike Garry, Rowan McCabe and Kate Fox.
