Dad’s agony after seeing son drown in dive ordeal

- By Molly Clayton

A TEENAGE boy who disappeared during a dive off Malaysia drowned before rescuers could reach him, his heartbroken British father has revealed.

Adrian Chesters, 46, was found early yesterday by fishermen some 60 miles from where his group had been ‘abandoned at sea’ by a ‘meth-taking captain’.

He had been in the water for four days and is now said to be in a stable condition in hospital.

Mr Chesters, from Sheffield, told officials that his 14-year-old son Nathen had become too weak to stay afloat during their ordeal and slipped away.

The authorities in neighbouring Indonesia have now taken over the search for Nathen’s body. They are being guided by where his father was found and the sea’s currents.

Engineer Mr Chesters, his Dutch national son and 18-yearold Alexia Molina from France, who was also found alive yesterday morning, had been on a training dive near Tokong Sanggol, a small island off the southeastern town of Mersing. Their captain has been detained.

The Foreign Office said they have been in contact with Mr Chesters’s family.

A spokesman said: ‘We are in contact with the local authorities and stand ready to provide assistance to the British man.’
