OF ALL the ideas that Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi could have proposed to improve football, he plumped for an opening ceremony for the Champions League final. He wants the Champions

League to be as big as the Super Bowl, he said.

You know what the really dispiriting thing about that is? For most of us who love football, the Champions League final is every bit as big as the Super Bowl. It’s just that we don’t need an opening ceremony to tell us that.
