DRAMA JULIA SKY/NOW DRAMA

Until now, Julia Child hasn’t been very well known in the UK, but in the US she was a pioneering TV cook – a sort of Fanny Cradock crossed with Delia Smith – and a hugely popular figure who helped change the way Americans ate. This loosely biographical eight-part series dramatises her rise to stardom in the 1960s and the way in which she dealt with the challenges of celebrity. With Sarah Lancashire (right) as Julia (Meryl Streep played her in the 2009 comedy Julie & Julia), David Hyde Pierce as her loving husband Paul (he thinks of his wife as ‘a budding rose in a forest of dandelions’, but he’s not a big fan of television and doesn’t entirely approve of her career), and Bebe Neuwirth (another Frasier veteran – she played Lilith, Frasier’s chilly ex) as her acidic friend Avis, it’s a lot of fun. Lancashire is tremendous, as is Hyde Pierce. Highly recommended. Available now writer also worked on Gomorrah. From Tuesday
