Rotherham back in business as promotion rivals stumble

-

ROTHERHAM got their League One promotion push back on track with a 1-0 win over Ipswich before leaders Wigan and second-placed MK Dons suffered home defeats.

Top scorer Michael Smith bagged his 25th goal of the season as Rotherham snapped a three-game losing streak.

Smith picked up a trio of trophies at the club’s ‘end-of-season’ awards bash on Thursday. Boss Paul Warne said: ‘It was random having it in the middle of the season, but he won all the awards so maybe he felt good about himself.’

Rotherham’s victory piled the pressure on Wigan — and they fluffed their lines as they lost 2-1 against mid-table Cambridge.

Harvey Knibbs and Sam Smith were Cambridge’s scorers before half-time. Tom Naylor pulled a goal back for Wigan with 13 minutes left but their nine-game unbeaten run came to an end.

Manager Leam Richardson said: ‘It’s the first whack we’ve received round the head for a long time.’

MK Dons also slipped up last night as they went down 3-2 to play-off hopefuls Sheffield Wednesday, allowing Rotherham to move above them into second.
