Wilson vows to ride to Toon’s rescue

CALLUM WILSON insists he will play again this season after getting on his bike in a bid to boost his fitness.

Newcastle’s £20million striker has been sidelined since the end of December with a torn calf muscle.

It was feared the England forward would not figure again in the Geordies’ fight for Premier League survival, but he is confident he will be back to play some part in the final weeks of the campaign after returning to non-contact training.

Wilson has sped up his rehabilitation by taking to two wheels alongside Toon team-mate Matt Ritchie. He revealed: ‘You need to do something outside of running and it’s been something I’ve been able to do consistently. Matty’s got little legs so mine don’t have to go round as fast!

‘Now the sun’s coming out again, the bike’s out. You didn’t see me biking around in December and January, that’s for sure, because it’s too cold up here but it’s something I’ve taken to in the last year or so.

I’m enjoying it and I’m getting to see Newcastle on two wheels.’

Despite his lengthy absence, Wilson remains Newcastle’s top scorer this season with six goals. He added: ‘I aim to be back by the end of April or the beginning of May.’

Eddie Howe’s side can take a huge step towards securing their Premier League status with victory at home against Leicester today.

‘Nobody knows how many points we need to stay up so we are taking every game as a huge opportunity to put points on the board,’ said Howe.
