Jay Blades: No Place Like Home
Channel 5, 9pm
The Repair Shop’s Jay Blades (far right) takes a journey into the past looking at the story of the various places he has lived in this new three-part series.
Beginning with his childhood in and around Hackney, East London, he shares happy memories with old friends as he observes how much gentrification has changed the neighbourhood.
But the area is also steeped in some of the darkest and most painful chapters of British history, from the savage reign of the Kray twins to street battles against fascists in the 1930s and the air raids that Germany launched on residential streets using Zeppelins in the First World War.
Going even further back, Blades uncovers the shameful legacy of slave owners, who once lived in the area where he grew up, while his own ancestors were enslaved in Barbados. ★★★★
