Eurovision Song Contest 2022
BBC1, 8pm
Our perennial Eurovision wit, Graham Norton (right), can really enthuse about the UK entry this year. After ten years in the doldrums (not even on the left-hand side of the scoreboard!), Tik Tok sensation Sam Ryder and the catchy, wistful Space Man could rocket into the top five.
He faces competition from Ukraine – for obvious reasons – who could clean up on the public vote, if not the juries’ verdict. Italy could win again, after last year’s victory by pleather-clad rockers Maneskin. Spain and Sweden are in contention too.
The overall mood of the songs is rather downbeat, not surprisingly, so let's hope some old-school fun/weird stuff makes the final, too. Such as Norway's goofy but slick Give That Wolf A Banana, and the moody Serbian songstress who's obsessed with Meghan Markle’s hair and rubs her hands like a Slavonic Lady Macbeth. ★★★★★
