Get the suncream on! Britain’s going to be even hotter than Ibiza
MILLIONS basked on beaches, at barbecues and in back gardens yesterday – and today could prove even hotter.
Temperatures hit 24C (75F) in some areas of the UK, making it the warmest day of the year so far.
Although parts of the country will this morning wake up to showers and even the odd rumble of thunder, by mid-morning the UK will be bathed in sunshine, with temperatures expected to hit 23C (73F) in the South.
Warm air from North Africa is also due to bring above-average temperatures for May to most places in Britain over the next five days, but these will be broken up with potentially heavy or thundery showers.
The Met Office said parts of the South East could potentially reach 27C (81F) by the end of the week – making it hotter than Ibiza.
Meanwhile, asthma and hayfever sufferers have been warned about the high pollen levels across most of England and Wales this weekend, with medium levels elsewhere in the UK.
Andy Page, the Met Office’s chief meteorologist, said: ‘The plume of warm air we have been expecting from the South will bring higher temperatures across the country over the next week.
‘However, it looks like the effects from the Atlantic lows will prevent sustained high pressure building from the East.
‘This means that while we might see some warm – and in places very warm – days, overall the next week will feel more like what we would expect of a warm spell in May, with some heavy showers around, rather than hot summery weather.’
