Want to get rid of your acne, kids? Eat oily fish

- By Stephen Adams MEDICAL EDITOR

PARENTS struggling to convince teenagers to eat a healthier diet can now cite scientific research that found eating oily fish helps prevent acne.

Experts believe salmon, mackerel and other food high in omega-3 fatty acids – such as chickpeas and lentils – can ensure a clear complexion.

Dermatologists made the link after examining the diets of 100 people over 12 with acne and their levels of certain nutritional markers. They found 94 sufferers had omega-3 fatty acids below recommended levels.

The German team, from Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, claim fatty acids, which can be taken as capsules, have anti-inflammatory properties that prevent acne forming. Lead author Dr Anne Gürtler said they were ‘most promising’.

Professor Asli Bilgic, of Akdeniz University in Turkey, said: ‘This exciting research helps us get one step closer to providing effective treatments for the millions of people who face embarrassment and stigma from this skin condition.’
