THE QUEEN’S PLATINUM JUBILEE CELEBRATION Tonight, ITV, 8pm

He relishes a mission impossible, but now

Tom Cruise takes on his greatest challenge: to put on a show worthy of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

He is just one of the many A-list faces – including Helen Mirren, Joan Collins and Alan Titchmarsh – who are taking part in the ultimate Royal command performance, honouring Her Majesty’s 70 years on the throne.

While next month the entire kingdom will be coming together for the Jubilee Weekend, first the historic landmark is celebrated with a breathtaking feast of entertainment in the grounds of Windsor Castle.

A jaw-dropping roster of celebrities is scheduled to feature in a live broadcast, presented by Phillip Schofield and Julie Etchingham. The framework is the nation’s history from the 16th Century to now, told over four acts, each compered by a star: Cruise, Homeland actor Damian Lewis, Adjoa Andoh (Bridgerton’s Lady Danbury), and gardener

Alan Titchmarsh.

Mirren takes on the role of Elizabeth I, recreating the

Virgin Queen’s speech at

Tilbury. The race through the centuries also includes the Gunpowder Plot, and there are moments devoted to each of the four Home Nations and the Commonwealth too, all played by a cast known as the ‘Queen’s

Players’, while Omid Djalili as The Herald will provide plenty of dollops of comedy and light relief linking the stories together.

Complementing the showbiz glitter is the pageantry of the Armed Forces on parade, and alongside some 1,300 performers there are also 500 horses on display, no doubt much to the delight of the Queen.

Mezzo soprano Katherine Jenkins, singer-songwriter Gregory Porter and Broadway and Hollywood star Keala Settle (The Greatest Showman) provide music, along with an orchestra featuring Tri-Service personnel, all under the direction of composer Debbie Wiseman.

Other stars and national figures to look out for include Andrew Lloyd Webber, Ant & Dec, Sir Mo Farah, Dame Maureen Lipman, Sir David Jason, Dame Kelly Holmes, Moira Stuart and Sir Trevor McDonald.

So be sure to tune in, or you’ll be missing out – unless, that is, you’ve got a better view as a visitor or even a resident at Windsor Castle.
