Courage is a word bandied around too cheaply, but it applies to Andy Woodward (Gerard Kearns, right). In 2016, this former professional footballer came forward in the press to reveal how, as a child, he had been sexually abused by coach Barry Bennell (Jonas Armstrong). More than a hundred other victims then followed in his footsteps to provide their devastating testimony, eventually leading to the trial and conviction of Bennell, who was jailed for decades for his horrific crimes.
Now this feature-length drama tells the story of Woodward’s life, showing how he was groomed by Bennell and suffered trauma that haunted him into adulthood. The flash-back sequences in the Eighties are disturbing, with Armstrong convincing as the authority figure who exploits his position after winning the trust of the boys.
