Environment-friendly garden goodies that will put the ‘green’ in your green fingers

-

THERE’S a big trend towards sustainability in gardening. From containers made from plastics removed from the sea to a solar-powered watering system, here are some of the latest ecofriendly tools and gadgets for green gardeners.

Haws – Langley Sprinkler Recycled

If you need to water seedlings, young plants or houseplants, do it in style with this little watering can from Haws. Made from recyclable plastic, it comes with a fine spray rose that makes accurate watering easy, and the sprinkler head can be removed for more targeted watering. Available in five colours (green, sage, black, blue and duck egg blue), it holds a pint of water and weighs 0.8kg when full. £7.99 (haws.co.uk)

Twool – Tree & Shrub Tie

Made from Whiteface Dartmoor sheep wool and another native breed wool, this stuff is thick, durable and perfect for securing stems of trees and shrubs to supports. Unlike rubber-coated wire ties and polypropylene twine, it won’t damage stems as they expand and is biodegradable, making it better for the environment. The material comes in fivemetre lengths and is available in four colours. £4.95 (twool.co.uk)

Oxley’s – Casa Furniture

Based in Gloucestershire, Oxley’s create garden furniture made from 100 per cent recycled aluminium. The company also guarantees to buy back furniture at half its original price, renovate it and give it a new home. Use their online configurator to design your own furniture. A bistro trio set costs £895 (oxleys.com)

Ocean Plastic Pots – Bloom Series Pot and Saucer

Perfect for showing off houseplants and raising outdoor plants, the Bloom Series of pots and saucers are made from recycled plastic salvaged by company owner and commercial diver Ally Mitchell from a stricken cargo ship that hit a reef off the west of Scotland. The pots and saucers come in shades of blue, green and peach, and represent the original colour of the raw materials.

A 13cm-wide pot and saucer costs £20 (oceanplasticpots.com)

Gardena – AquaBloom

This clever watering system needs no mains water or power supply. Perfect for patios and balconies, it can keep 20 containers watered via tiny drippers. The kit comes with a micro irrigation pipe, drippers and a unit containing a pump for drawing up water from a bucket, a controller with 14 watering programmes and a solar panel to power the batteries. RRP £114.99 (gardena. co.uk for stockists)
