Father dies in riptide rescue

A FATHER who died after rescuing a group of children from a riptide has been hailed as a hero.

Hywel Morgan, 47, helped save the youngsters in the sea at Poppit Sands, St Dogmaels, Ceredigion, on Friday evening. The local man was recovered from the sea but could not be saved.

His family issued a tribute to Mr Morgan, who was known as Hyw, saying: ‘Hyw was a hero. Despite our pain and grief, it gives us comfort that he selflessly tried to prevent others from losing their lives.’

Two children were taken to hospital after the incident as a precaution.
